Almost several weeks after laden truck GKK 9154 fell into the Essequibo River at the Good Hope/Supenaam Ferry Stelling, senior officials of the Transport and Harbours Department have finally engaged the owner of the truck, Delroy Griffith, driver, Husbard Thomas, a/k “Anto”, and Jagnarine Singh, a/k “Teddy”, the owner of the lost cargo.
The three men were invited to a meeting with members of Transport and Harbours headquarters in Georgetown last week and were asked to lodge individual statements pertaining to the incident involving the truck which fell overboard.
They were promised a response within the next two weeks.
Officials from T&HD had conducted a formal investigation into the recent mishap that occurred on April 9.
The truck GKK9154 fell into the Essequibo River, after the driver was attempting to exit the ferry M.V. Kanawan.
Initial reports were that the back door of the ferry which serves as a ramp slipped off of the Stelling, because one section of the lines was not properly secured.
A canter truck along with five passengers had already exited the boat before driver of the ill fated truck, Husbard Thomas, attempted to disembark the ferry.
Thomas said in his formative report that sailors were present at the Stelling when he attempted to disembark the ferry but no one alerted him that the lines were not properly secured.
He said that he is not sure what the outcome of the meeting with members of Transport and Harbours Department would be but he however indicated that the owner of the ill fated truck is lobbying for compensation for another vehicle.
The truck falling into the Essequibo River is the second such incident to have occurred in the past three years.
In 2010, at the Adventure ferry stelling, a truck GEE 7332 belonging to John Walcott fell overboard after the driver was maneuvering from the MV Torani shortly after the vessel had docked.
Walcott had repeated engagements with members of Transport and Harbours, but he has disclosed that he was never compensated for damages to his truck and his lost cargo.
