Dear Editor,
Your paper does a very good job of exposing to the public what some of our countrymen are doing to bring our country down. And because of this I read your paper almost daily.
So it was with much disappointment that I read in your article of April 16th: Dem boys seh … Nokta is a fake Amerindian, the use of a derogatory, racial term referring to one minority group in Guyana.
I responded with a comment, but I have not seen it appear in your paper yet. I am not sure it ever will, so I decided to write this letter.
Before you throw my comments here in the waste basket also, please realize that people look up to you as someone who knows better, especially in the use of language. So, I ask you not to misuse this power to lead us back to the days when, in ignorance, intolerance or hatred, we referred to others who were different from us as bu—s, ni——s, co——s and in other racially offensive terms.
Allow me to say that by the use of these terms in your paper, one can only presume that you look down on these people (my people) solely because of where they were born and who their ancestors were, regardless of what they have achieved or how they behave in Guyanese society (my society). It is easy to assume that the use of this term by you is an attempt to keep these people down as was done in the past, no matter how hard they work or how much they have contributed to our society, especially considering where they started.
Further, you may want to refrain from doing this in the future solely from a selfish position since your paper is read and judged and its contents evaluated by foreigners also. And lazy, intolerant language probably is one of the factors used in this evaluation of your paper and you, personally, as the person who edited the article before printing.
So, I hope your publish this letter in your paper, even if you do not agree with my sentiments. It may help you by giving some of your readers the impression that you are balanced in your reporting, even when others disagree with you.
Help and encourage us to move forward racially.
