The Commissioner of Police (COP) Inter Division t20 Cricket Competition sponsored by C. Persaud Dental Clinic and Laboratory continued yesterday with three matches as ‘F’ division and ‘B’ division advancing to today’s semi-final, while TSC drew a bye to the final.
It could come down to Trevor Benn against Michael Newland today in the semi-final between ‘F’ division and ‘B’ division from 09:00hrs at Eve Leary with the winner facing TSC, for the $200, 000 winner’s prize.
TSU are already assured of at least $150,000 even if they lose and will be all to play between Newland’s Berbice division and Benn’s ‘F’ division from the Interior location.
Yesterday a full house at Eve Leary watched TSU, led by useful all-round performances from Rawle Haynes and Stephon Blacks beat ‘A’ division by 45 runs in the morning game played in sultry conditions on a placid track on heavy outfield.
Blacks followed up his classy 82 in the first round with a solid 30 and along with Bertie Carmichael (15) added 29 for the first wicket before Haynes weighed in with an unbeaten 43 to see TSU to 138-8 despite a fine performance by Eion Parris who grabbed 4-37.
Blacks returned to capture 3-10 with his medium pace while Haynes took 3-12 and Quinton Sugrim 2-22 as ‘A’ division were blown away for 93 in 18.4 overs with only Rolston Grenville (21) and Ganesh Deokarran (15) reaching double figures.
In the afternoon game, ‘E’ division from Linden, wasted a superb fielding display which included outstanding work behind the stumps from Jermaine Tucker and a stupendous catch at short-mid wicket by Carlsdale Austin, who dived forward to hold a stunning low catch to remove Philburg Wilburg off Naddan Haniff with an ordinary exhibition of batting to be all out for 73 in reply to ‘B’ division’s 146-8.
Haniff removed the first two batsmen to leave ‘B’ division on 12-2 before Kord Griffith (14) who fell at 68-2 and Davidson (31) put on 56 for the third wicket. Former Berbice inter-county cricketer and sprinter Newland (10) was then brilliantly run out by a direct hit as the Berbicians slumped from 68-2 to 131-8.
Haniff, Khemraj Chand and Orin Sobers picked up two wickets each for ‘B’ division whose bowling, apart from Newland, looked innocuous.
However, the batsmen failed to take advantage of some very loose bowling with only Jevon Thomas (15) and Austin, who hit two sixes off successive balls before he was bowled for 13, getting into the teens. Ansel Doris picked up 3-19 and got support from Brentnol Woolford (2-20).
At GDF, ‘D’ division from West Demerara, were bowled out for 100 with only Dellon Henry (25) reaching 20 as 28-year-old hyper active pacer Trevor Benn taking 3-3 and Kelsey Roberts 3-8.
Keith Jobe top-scored with 29 as ‘F’ division reached 104-3 with seven overs to spare. Richbland Blauhun and Benn, who toured with the Guyana first class team without playing a game, both made 21 with Benn finishing the contest with a boundary.
