Prominent Canadian Civil Rights Lawyer Selwyn A. Pieters, B.A., LL.B., L.E.C. has been retained to represent Guyana’s largest trade union, the Guyana Trade Union Congress, in the Walter Rodney Commission of Inquiry.
The Guyana Trades Unions Congress is the umbrella organization for 22 affiliated unions of some 70,000 workers. It is affiliated to the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions (ICFTU).
Dr. Walter Rodney was an internationally renowned historian and a political leader of the Working People’s Alliance in Guyana. He was killed in Guyana in 1980 in a bomb blast.
Dr. Walter Rodney’s book “How Europe Underdeveloped Africa” 1972 remains an essential piece of reading on Africa and its past relationship with Europe. Another book, Grounding With My Brothers, also remains a significant work on oppressed Africans in the Caribbean.
Selwyn Pieters said, “I feel honoured to be asked to appear in this important inquiry on behalf of workers. Walter Rodney made significant efforts to promote the liberation of the working class in the Caribbean and North America and to promote equity, equality and human dignity for all people.”
