A businessman was seriously wounded by a man who has since being released on $50,000 bail.
Mantrobah Persaud, 33, of Lot 8H King Street, Hampshire, Corentyne, Berbice who operates a liquor restaurant in Rose Hall Town was at the receiving end of a brutal beating by a man whom he won at a betting shop on March 23.
According to Persaud, around 19:30 hrs on the day in question he went to the High Grade Wash Bay Rose Hall, Corentyne, where he consumed some alcohol. Horse racing was also being broadcast on television and Persaud and the accused, Seeindra Marimutoo, of no fixed place of abode each bet $2,000 on different horses.
However, after the race ended, a disagreement arose between the two men after Marimutoo lost his bet and refused to pay up. He allegedly picked up a pool stick and dealt Persaud a lash to his head. The man fell to the ground and also suffered a broken foot. He found himself at the Port Mourant hospital where he was treated and sent away despite his head being swollen and in pain.
The man’s situation worsened and he sought medical attention at the Dr. Balwant Singh Hospital where it was diagnosed that he suffered a fractured neck.
Marimutoo appeared before Magistrate Rabindranauth Singh at the Albion Magistrate’s Court on Thursday. He pleaded not guilty to the charge of Assault Causing Actual Bodily Harm.
The man and his family are very disappointed because the assailant was only charged with Assault Causing Actual Bodily Harm instead of Attempt Murder.
Police Sergeant Phillip Sherrif is prosecuting.
The matter has been fixed for continuation on May 13.
