A 50-year-old fisherman, accused of carting off with almost $3M in jewellery and electronic gadgets from the parked car of two city Café customers, yesterday appeared in court and was remanded to prison.
Albert De Freitas of Leopold Street, Georgetown stood in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court to face two counts of simple larceny. The charges were read to him by Magistrate Ann McLennan.
It is alleged that on April 9 at Carmichael Street, Georgetown, De Freitas stole a quantity of items totaling $2,924,000 from Thomas Richardson Hassin and Joy Karen Smallwood.
According to the first charge, he made off with $2.1M in items from Hassin which included one tri-coloured gold and diamond ring, one Samsung computer as well as one Samsung Galaxy Notebook. From Smallwood, he allegedly stole one Apple computer, three Prada sunglasses and other items.
The accused pleaded not guilty and submitted a bail application through his lawyer, Kendaise Rodney.
The prosecution was conducted by Corporal Deniro Jones who said that the two persons were at Oasis Café on Carmichael Street when the items were stolen.
Jones explained that the charge was instituted against De Freitas since investigators uncovered that his fingerprints were on the car which had the articles.
The Corporal offered objections to bail, citing the serious nature and prevalence of the offence. Jones told the court that the accused has a pending simple larceny matter in another court.
De Freitas’ attorney, however, contended that the fingerprints did not match her client’s and asked the court to consider bail.
Notwithstanding the application put forward by the defence, Magistrate McLennan upheld the objections placed forward by the Prosecution and remanded De Freitas.
The case will be called again before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry on May 19 at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
