The main political opposition, A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) is maintaining that changes to this year’s budget, are necessary to improve the quality of life of ordinary citizens. This was touted by members of the political opposition, during a recent outreach in Region Six.
According to a statement from the coalition, a public meeting was held at Rose Hall Town, Corentyne, last weekend.
During the outreach, Leader of the Opposition, Brigadier David Granger and APNU’s Members of Parliament, Basil Williams, Volda Lawrence, Christopher Jones and Dr. Rishi Thakur addressed a gathering on the party’s main interest in the 2014 budget.
APNU members called for the introduction of programmes to relieve the plight of depressed communities and for the immediate introduction of a National Procurement Commission and on the Administration to make changes to the 2014 Budget for the public good.
Brigadier Granger told the gathering that the 2014 Budget has failed to present a comprehensive financial plan for the development of the material resources and for the improvement of the quality of life for the ordinary people while APNU Member of Parliament, Basil Williams, a lawyer, said that the people of Guyana deserved a Budget that would lower the costs of living, stimulate growth and improve the quality of life for the working man and woman.
Other speakers called on the PPP/C Administration to reduce the Berbice River Bridge toll, to increase the old age pension and public assistance and increase public servants’ salaries.
Calls were also made for the restructuring of GuySuCo so that it could become a viable company.
APNU Member of Parliament, Christopher Jones highlighted the absence of a National Youth Policy. Jones said; “Young people in Guyana want good paying jobs, but sadly this Budget says nothing and offers nothing in the way of job creation.”
On Sunday, the group joined Buxton residents to distribute kites to the children of the village.
