A Customs officer formerly attached to the Guyana Post Office Corporation (GPOC) Timehri branch was yesterday brought before a city Magistrate to be indicted for drug trafficking following the discovery of cocaine in a mail bag at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) a few days ago.
Yesterday morning, the accused Guyana Revenue Authority Employee, Clive David, was taken to the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court charged with possession of a narcotic for the purpose of trafficking.
The charge which was read to David by Magistrate Ann McLennan alleged that between April 9 and April 11 at GPOC on Robb Street, he trafficked 647 grams of cocaine.
The accused pleaded not guilty and submitted an application for bail through his lawyer, Lancelot Patrick Ferreira.
Ferreira told the court that his client is a long standing GRA employee. He said that the man was given the package by a friend to post.
Stating that he does not believe the investigations into the matter are complete, the lawyer urged the Magistrate to consider bail for his client.
His application, however, was met with sharp objections from the Prosecution, spearheaded by Corporal Deniro Jones, who said that no special reasons were raised by the defence counsel for David to be granted bail.
Jones said that the police are in possession of a confession statement given by the defendant who professed that he posted the envelopes knowing that the illicit substance was concealed inside.
Notwithstanding the application by the defence, Magistrate McLennan upheld the objections submitted by the Prosecution.
The court, she said, found that no special reasons were brought forward for bail to be granted to the accused and he was remanded to prison.
The case will be called again on May 9 at the said court before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.
Based on reports, Police Narcotics Branch ranks were conducting a routine search when the illegal substance was unearthed in several envelopes in a mail bag.
The bag was about to be loaded onto a Caribbean Airlines flight bound for the John F Kennedy International Airport (JFK) in New York in the United States of America.
On Monday, last David was taken into police custody following a thorough investigation into the drug bust.
