“The Berbice Cricket Board takes this opportunity to congratulate leg spinner Devendra Bishoo for etching his name in the record books for his outstanding bowling figures in the last round of the West Indies Cricket Board Regional four day cricket competition against Trinidad and Tobago,” the BCB said in a release.
“First, he took 9 wickets in the first innings and returned to take 6 in the second innings to end with 15 wickets in the game,” the release noted.
In an invited comment, Anil Beharry, first Vice President of the Board, said that despite Guyana’s poor performance this year, he is very pleased with the performance of Berbician Bishoo. He said the Board is confident that Bishoo can return to the West Indies sooner than later. He added that when Bishoo was dropped for the penultimate game, he knew that he would have returned with a bang. Bishoo is known to be a determined, hard-working, disciplined and talented cricketer. Beharry said he still can’t understand how Guyana performed so badly, taking into consideration that this team is one of the best we can put together over the years.
He called for a total overhaul of Guyana’s cricket if we are to return to the top. “It is very painful to see how poorly we performed match after match,” he stated. Beharry questioned some of the players’ commitment as well but with Bishoo’s outstanding bowling in the last match in particular, there is still hope.
He asked for patience for the younger players that played and with proper nurturing, they will deliver in the future. The cupboard is not empty, Beharry added; the young Rajendra Chandrika, Hemraj, Ronsford Beaton, Vishaul Singh, Tagenarine Chanderpaul, Gudakesh Motie, Akshay Homraj, Raun Johnson and Shimron Hetmyer, among others, are very talented.
He once again congratulated Bishoo and wished him well in the future. He challenged the younger players to try and emulate Bishoo.
