Notorious criminal. Davendra Harricharran, called ‘Bara’, 27, of Nigg Squatting area, Corentyne, Berbice, who was wanted for the recent $10M robbery, appeared in the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s court on Monday before Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus and was remanded to jail.
Inspector Grace Bristol told the court that on April 9, at Rose Hall Town, while armed with guns, he robbed Ramlinggum Mangalie of $10M dollars, property of Ramlinggum Mangalie and Subramanie Mangalie. He was not required to plead.
Prosecutor Bristol cited the nature, gravity and prevalence of the offence. In her objection to bail, she also stated that a firearm was used. The accused was recently on a murder charge.
Two unmasked armed bandits on a motor cycle without a registration number, had held up and robbed Corentyne businessman Ramlinggum Mangalie, called Buddy, of $10M in cash. The man was about to deposit the money into the Republic Bank, Rose Hall Branch.
Ramlinggum along with his brother Subramanie Mangalie and father, Mangalie Permaul, owns and operates the Permaul’s Snackette, Trading and Distribution store at Lot 30 B, Albion Road, Corentyne.
Ramlinggum was in his minivan, PPP1632, and had just pulled up in front of the bank to deposit the money when he was accosted by the two bandits on a motorcycle. The pillion rider dismounted and discharged a round in the air and grabbed the bag. He then grabbed another bag containing $7M.
The man put up a fight but released the bag after the bandit discharged a round. The thief then remounted the motor cycle and he and his companion fled.
Mangalie gave chase. However, due to the state of the street the man gave up the chase. The matter was reported and the police responded and went after the bandits. They then proceeded on foot into the backlands but the men had long disappeared. The motor cycle which was stripped for the purpose was found abandoned in the backlands.
The police had launched a manhunt for the two suspects and after diligent investigation and acting on information, the police surprised the bandit at a gamble house at No.5 Village, West Coast Berbice on Friday Night.
Investigators had received information that Harricharran was the owner of the motorcycle and had taken it to a Mechanic shop to be repaired. However, due to the fact that the bike did not have any registration number, it was difficult to recognize. However, Investigators are seeking the help of the GRA to get the serial number of the bike.
Harricharran was identified as the gun man. ‘Bara’ who was a member of the notorious ‘Pop Corn’ gang was recently freed on a murder charge.
He was charged along with Gansham Jagassar called ‘Suresh’ and Abdulssalam Azimullah called “Sato” 29 of Lot 183 Hampshire, Corentyne, Berbice, for the 2004 murder of Gary Simon which occurred at Nigg Settlement, Corentyne, Berbice in a rum shop.
After a preliminary inquiry conducted at the Albion Magistrate’s Court, they were committed to stand trial for manslaughter in the High Court and granted bail. The DPP subsequently reviewed the case and ordered that the men be committed for murder. However, by that time Azimullah could not be found. He was subsequently nabbed nine years after and is awaiting his day in court.
