A city Magistrate yesterday sentenced a 28-year-old Albouystown vendor to three years in jail after he confessed to trafficking drugs “to make ends meet.”
Yesterday, Magistrate Ann McLennan told Jason Heyliger that coupled with his jail sentence, he will also pay a fine of $205,400.
Heyliger who resides at Lot 298 Independence Boulevard, Albouystown, was on Monday busted by police ranks on jeep patrol and subsequently charged for being in possession of 171 grams of cannabis for trafficking purposes.
Three days later, he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court and pleaded guilty to the charge.
State Prosecutor, Corporal Deniro Jones explained that about 17:55 that day Heyliger was stopped and searched by the ranks who had noticed him “approaching others” with a Bob Marley haversack on his back.
Jones explained that when the ranks checked the haversack they found a quantity of leaves, seeds and stems suspected to be cannabis concealed in silver foil and a black plastic bag.
He explained that the illicit substance was also found in Heyligar’s pants pocket. He was taken into police custody and the charge was instituted against him.
The Prosecution stated too that the defendant has had no previous charges or convictions before any court.
