Leg-spinner Devendra Bishoo grabbed 6-71 to finish with match figures of 15-149 and put Guyana in a wonderful position to register their first win in the final round of this year’s Regional four-day cricket match when the penultimate day of the contest against Trinidad & Tobago ended at Providence yesterday.
Bishoo crowned a sensational comeback after being dropped for the last round and will hope that with the match in the balance, the batsmen don’t waste his effort today on a last day pitch expected to offer assistance to the spinners.
Bishoo said he had nothing to prove to anyone. “I did not have anything to prove to anyone but myself. I am very happy to be back in the team and for such an achievement. I took the most wickets by a Guyanese in this match and also reached 200 first-class wickets today (yesterday) so I am satisfied with my performance here,” Bishoo disclosed.
He said while he was disappointed in not being retained for the CPL “there are some things you have no control over”.
Set 225 to win in 35 minutes plus the entire day today after dismissing the visitors for 212 in their second innings, Guyana reached 17-1 when bad light stopped play with four overs of the day remaining.
Guyana, who fell 12 runs short of T&T’s 294, lost Trevon Griffith (13), who was struck a nasty blow when he ducked into bouncer from Shannon Gabriel, before being trapped LBW to off-spinner Amit Jaggernauth just before the close in fading light.
Tagenarine Chanderpaul (3) and night watchman Bishoo (0) saw Guyana to the close, 208 away from a consolation victory which would deny T&T their first title at this level since 2006.
After Barbados beat the Leewards by an innings and 49 runs inside three days yesterday to climb to 82 points, T&T, who began the final round on 72 points, must win today if they are to prevent Barbados from successfully defending their title.
A draw will not be enough for T&T and all Barbados would be hoping the Guyanese do not suffer their fifth defeat of the season in a game of only academic interest to them since they are at the bottom of the points table.
The prospects of rain today could add to the drama as T&T hunt their sixth title as they aim to avoid a second loss in two games on the road following their defeat in Barbados.
Guyana began the day in overcast conditions on 247-7 and were dismissed for 282, 47 minutes into the day despite Zaheer Mohamed’s (58) fourth half-century at this level.
Bishoo, who joined Ryan Hinds and Derick Parry as the only bowlers with 15 wickets in a regional match, fell for 27 as Jaggernauth (4-78), Gabriel (3-44) and Skipper Rayad Emrit (3-39) took the wickets for T&T.
When T&T, with four wins in the tournament began their reply, only Jason Mohamed (33) Stephen Ketwaroo (32), Imran Khan (29), Lendl Simmons (25) and Marlon Richards (25) reached 25 as T&T slumped from 99-3 to 212 all out.
Bishoo, who fell one wicket short of the record 16 wickets in a match set by T&T leg-spinner Rajendra Dhanraj who took 16 against the Leewards in 1996, captured his 12th five-wicket haul and his second 10-wicket haul following his 9-78 in the first innings which is a Guyana record.
Fast bowler Keon Joseph, who took the other wicket to fall in the first innings, captured 4-56 as he and the 28-year-old Bishoo took all the T&T wickets between them on the placid track.
Joseph removed both openers, Simmons at 37-1 and Ketwaroo at 77-3 before returning to get rid of Khan and Richards while Bishoo, who began this match with 13 scalps, advanced to 28, one short of Guyana’s leading wicket taker, fellow Albion Test spinner Veerasammy Permaul, who missed this match due to Chicken Pox.
Play on today’s final day is scheduled to commence at 10:00hrs.
