Taxi driver given $1M to bribe DPP official – court hears

A taxi driver from Enmore, East Coast Demerara was yesterday hauled before the courts after he allegedly converted to his own use over $1M that was entrusted to him for a remand prisoner’s legal fees.
Shamal Thomas, 32, appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court and was granted $150,000 bail after pleading not guilty to the charge.
The court was told that between February 1 and March 28, Thomas was entrusted by Jennifer Sertima with $1.7M to solicit an attorney to represent Calvin King (charged for murder and robbery under arms). Instead, he allegedly converted the money to his own use.
However, Thomas’s  lawyer, Paul Fung-a-Fat, told the court that Sertima was offering his client money “to bribe someone in the Office of the Public Prosecution.”
“I’m asking for reasonable bail to prove it your worship,” Fung-A-Fat said.
He urged the court to consider that his client had no previous charges.
Police Prosecutor Inspector Michael Grant raised no objection and bail was allowed. The case will be called again on May 9 for statements.
King is the prisoner who is on remand for the deadly heist which occurred at the Lethem Post Office, Rupununi in January, last year. He is charged with murdering Security Guard, John Christopher as well as making off with $9,878,796 from the post office.
