Two of Berbice and Guyana’s leading sports organisations the Berbice Cricket Board (BCB) and the Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club (RHTY&SC) have joined hands to host the historic Republic Bank Scrabble tournament for Secondary Schools in Region 6.
The organisers have already received the blessings of the Ministry of Education, Region 6 Department.
BCB Administrative Officer, Ms. Alisa Moonsee informed that 17 schools would participate in the tournament which would be held in three categories; junior (ages 12 to 14), senior (ages 15 to 18) and teachers.
Each category winner would receive cash awards along with trophies. The main aims of the tournament according to Moonsee are to promote the importance of education among youths, assist students to improve their literary skills and to help students to formulate words.
Competition would get underway after a special training programme trains one teacher from each school who in return would train students to play the game. Each school would also be provided with scrabble sets.
Chairman of the BCB 75th Anniversary Committee and Secretary/CEO of the RHTY&SC Hilbert Foster hailed the hosting of the tournament and urged the participating schools to make sure that the game is promoted fully.
BCB First VP Anil Beharry noted that while cricket remains the main objective of the BCB, it was delighted to play a part in the development of the careers of the youths.
Region Six Education Officer with responsibility for Secondary schools, Ms. Selestina La Rose praised both the RHTY&SC and BCB for promoting the game in schools. The formulation of words, Ms. La Rose stated is very important in the educational sector and she expressed the hope that the tournament would become an annual affair.
Republic Bank, New Amsterdam Branch Manager Mr. Randolph Sears expressed pleasure that the bank was approached to sponsor the event.
