A total of five persons have been called to testify on behalf of the State as the Preliminary Inquiry (PI) into the death of longstanding policeman Silburn Elias got underway on Tuesday last before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
Delon Abrams, 23, of South Ruimveldt, is charged with murdering Detective Corporal 14998 Elias of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) on January 6, last at Alberttown, Georgetown.
Elias was reportedly shot dead after he reportedly went into a yard in Fourth Street, Alberttown to recapture an escaped prisoner and recover his colleague’s gun.
Corporal Elias was rushed to Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation where he was pronounced dead. A post mortem was conducted and a warhead of a .38 revolver was reportedly retrieved from the body.
The accused was recaptured and the charge was instituted against him.
The case is being prosecuted by Corporal Bharat Mangru. Adams is currently unrepresented.
The court has so far heard sworn testimonies from Elias’s cousin-in-law Faye Holder, Assistant Superintendent of Police Marlon Taylor, Sergeant Sohan Ramdat, Lance Corporal Thomas and Constable Joel Greene.
Adams has been remanded ever since his first court appearance on January 10, last.
The PI is scheduled to continue on April 23. A total of 24 witnesses are expected to testify on behalf of the state.
Corporal Elias, a father of four, and who resided at Buxton on the East Coast of Demerara, had spent the last 25 years of his life in the Guyana Police Force.
