The Chambers of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has issued an apology to Justice William Ramlal for inaccuracies carried in a press release, the contents of which were carried in an article in this newspaper last Wednesday.
The article had quoted the DPP as stating that Justice Ramlal had disposed of three cases, all of which he had upheld no case submissions and directed the jury to return not guilty verdicts.
In a subsequent article, Justice Ramlal expressed his displeasure over the statistics put out by the DPP’s Chambers, pointing out that he had dealt with four cases and only two no case submissions were upheld. He provided brief details of what transpired during the cases he presided over.
In light of his objections, the DPP’s office acknowledged the inaccuracy and penned an unequivocal public apology, a copy of which was reportedly hand-delivered to the judge.
Below is the full text of the apology.
“Dear Editor,
Reference the DPP’s Chambers Press Release published in the Kaieteur News of Wednesday April 9,
2014, please note that in relation to the three matters presented before Justice William Ramlal, I wish to make the following correction.
“At the same time Justice William Ramlal disposed of three matters also for the offence of Murder. In
two of these three matters, the Trial Judge upheld no case submissions and directed the jury to return formal verdicts of not guilty, In the other one matter of (the State vs. Carl Bennett), the jury returned a verdict of not guilty for the accused”.
The DPP Chambers apologises to the Honourable Justice William Ramlal for the embarrassment caused.
Thank you.
