Albert, Sattaur, Ramlakan spur E/Coast to 3-Wkt win over W/Dem
By Sean Devers
Led by a five-wicket haul from off-spinner Vivian Albert and half-centuries by Brian Sattaur and Vishwanauth Ramlakan, East Coast beat East Bank by three-wickets in the second round of the Demerara Cricket Board/Diamond Fire & General Insurance Under-19 50-over cricket tournament at the Enmore ground yesterday.
Albert took 5-37 to restrict West Demerara to 156-9 off 41 overs after seepage under the covers caused a delay of 102 minutes before Sattaur, who hammered seven fours and two sixes in a pugnacious 61 and Ramlakan, who hit seven boundaries in a solid 52 spearheaded East Coast to 159-7 from 35.5 overs despite a tidy spell of leg-spin bowling by Eshan Alli who finished with 4-37.
Earlier, Deonarine Seegobin’s 37 and Ryan Shun’s 36 provided East Bank, who were asked to bat in overcast conditions on a sluggish pitch, with a firm foundation of 76 before Albert, who extracted prodigious turn removed them both to start a slide which saw them losing nine wickets for 80 runs on the fairly fast outfield.
Shun was the first to go in the 23rd over before two wickets fell in the space of two runs when Andrew Chung was run out for a duck and Damion Waldron disturbed the stumps of Daniel Barker (2) as East Bank slipped to 78-3.
Seegobin hit three fours in his innings but was removed by Albert who bowled with good flight and variation to leave the score on 90-4. No batter after that, except Stephon Browne (16) reached 15. Albert got rid of Browne, Ricky Debidial (7) and Vikash Rampersaud (13) while Rashad Ali was run out for 13 . Micheal Sulton, who threw his bat around and hit the only six of the innings in his unbeaten 14, ensured the total passed 150.
When East Coast began their reply, National Under-19 left-hander Sattaur started in typical aggressive fashion before his opening partner Ramnarine Chatura, who scored a cultured half century against defending champions West Demerara in the first round on Tuesday, was trapped LBW to Browne for two at 16-1.
Left-hander Rudolph Singh just off a shot-filled 97 in the first round and on his home ground was LBW to Alli for 11 and when the explosive Sattaur who reached his 50 from just 54 balls fell two balls later trying to hit Alli out of the ground and was taken at long-on, East Bank were fighting back.
However, Ramlakan showing a level head remained almost to the end before being needlessly run out with victory three runs away. The final round of the competition with Georgetown facing East Coast at Everest and West Demerara, who kept hopes alive of retaining their title had a well earned win against the City side, face off with East Bank at Wales. Both matches are scheduled to commence at 09:30hrs.
