A teenage boy was yesterday brought before the courts to be prosecuted for the murder of a 57-year-old Brazilian national who was reportedly beaten to death last week at 5 Miles, Arakaka, North West District.
After being air dashed to the city, Samuel Allen was taken before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry yesterday morning, at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court to be indicted for the capital offence.
The 18-year-old is charged with murdering Joao De Souza at 5 Miles, Arakaka, in the North West District on April 3 (last Thursday). Allen was not required to enter a plea since the charge was laid indictably.
Defence Attorney Adrian Thompson inquired whether it would be possible for the case to be heard at the city court. The Chief Magistrate stated that for such to be granted an application ought to be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
Thompson told the court that his client had signed a document but “did not know the contents of the document since he had quit school at a young age” and as such did not possess the requisite knowledge to authenticate such a document.
Inspector Michael Grant indicated that the Prosecution was in possession of a confession statement. He, however, did not reveal the details of the crime.
The hearing lasted a total of three minutes and the teen was remanded. The matter was transferred to the Matthew’s Ridge Magistrate’s Court where it is expected to engage the attention of Magistrate Allan Wilson on May 6.
According to previous reports, De Souza, a Brazilian national who had been living in Guyana for the past three years, was beaten about his body during a robbery at 5 Miles, Arakaka, North West District around 20:30 hours last Wednesday.
The accused allegedly then made good his escape before help could come to the badly injured De Souza.
The Brazilian was taken to the Arakaka Health Centre and subsequently referred to the Georgetown Public Hospital. However, he succumbed while awaiting transportation at Matthews Ridge Airstrip at about 11:40 hours the following day.
A post mortem examination revealed that De Souza died as a result of cerebral hemorrhaging caused by blunt trauma to the head.
