A domestic squabble between a La Bonne Intention (LBI), East Coast Demerara couple, yesterday ended with a 29 year-old husband and father of one, nursing severe wounds at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation.
The man, who has been identified as Seelacknauth Persaud, a carpenter, was set ablaze by a lit kerosene stove yesterday. He is said to be nursing third degree burns at the hospital’s Burns Care Unit.
The man‘s spouse, whom his relatives identified as “Shivanie,” reportedly left the house immediately after the incident.
“She pack she things dem and gone by the mother. She nah tell we nothing wha happen. We nah hear back from she since then. She nah even come at the hospital wid we”
The incident took place at around noon yesterday, at Persaud’s Lot 39 LBI, East Coast Demerara residence. Relatives claimed that the couple had been experiencing domestic problems.
“He and he first wife lef’ and dem gat one child… He recently tek this girl, she is nineteen and he does complain about she steady … We nah really know what happen, he just dey at the back, he and he wife bin in the house alone. All we hear is somebody like dem ah holla and me son say look de house gat fire,” Dameswhar Persaud, the man’s brother explained.
The man said that he went to his brother’s rescue after he saw the flames.
“Me had to kick down the door and meh brother run out and roll up pun de ground. All he say is that ‘de stove bun me, de stove bun me’. We tek he and rush he down to Georgetown hospital. He get bun real bad.”
Police later took Persaud’s reputed wife in for questioning. Investigations are continuing.
