The National Training Squad Committee (NTSC) of the Guyana Amateur Swimming Association (GASA) has named a strong squad of swimmers to represent the Golden Arrowhead in upcoming competitions.
Sixty (60) swimmers from the various clubs in Guyana will go into training with Goodwill Games just around the corner and a number of other international competitions set to be staged. Among the upcoming events are – Caribbean Islands Swimming Championships in Barbados in July, which will be the first time that a Guyana team will be represented, the Commonwealth Games scheduled for Glasgow; followed by the Inter Guiana Games (July) and Youth Olympic Games (July/August)
The selected squad will be under the watchful eyes of Head Coach, Mr. Sean Baksh along with coaches Ms. Stephanie Fraser and Cuban coach, Ms. Isabel Couso Fals.
At a recent meeting held at the National Aquatic Centre, Liliendaal, swimmers along with their parents or guardians were addressed by Sean Baksh and newly elected President of GASA Mr. Ivan Persaud who is also Vice President of the Guyana Football Federation.
Baksh stressed the importance of discipline and dedication from the swimmers while outlining the plans the coaches have for the swimmers. He stressed the need to have all swimmers for all the sessions to have a settled unit.
Meanwhile, Persaud said that since the best management team has been assigned to prepare the young swimmers he expects that as a team, Guyana competes and not just participate as was evident in previous years.
He spoke highly of the important role of the parents to support the athletes by the way of offering the right foods and nutrition, enough time to attend training sessions and even provide transportation especially for the early morning and late night sessions that may be implemented to maximally prepare the athletes.
Carifta Games 2014, which will be held in Aruba from April 22 to 26 and Guyana, will be represented by a three member team; Britany van Lange and Soroya Simmons in pool with Stephanie Fraser on deck as coach.
Meanwhile, this year’s Goodwill Games will head east to Suriname on August 15 -17 and will see representation in all categories for both boys and girls.
The final touring squad for Goodwill Games will be known following the Goodwill Time Trials set for July 4 – 6, 2014. Guyana has had encouraging returns at Carifta Games in the past with Jessica Stephenson being the nation’s gold winner in her power breast stroke category.
