The woman who chopped a policeman on his hand with a cutlass when he tried to rescue the three-week-old baby that she was trying to drown, remains a patient at the National Psychiatric Hospital.
The policeman and his colleagues were praised by residents of the area for their bravery. They were forced to enter the house of the seemingly mentally ill, cutlass-wielding woman to carry out the rescue act.
The cops had broken into the house just in time to rescue the infant from her mother who was allegedly about to drown the child in a bucket of water.
The mother of three had moved into the area on Tuesday from Diamond, East Bank Demerara. The house which belongs to her grandmother was vacant and she decided to occupy the premises.
The eldest child is living with other relatives. The policeman was chopped on his hand in the process and had to be treated at the Fort Wellington Hospital.
The woman is said to be suffering from post-partum depression. According to information, this is the second time that she has broken down with the suspected illness.
She had allegedly suffered the problem after she had her second child.
Not much is known about the family since they moved into the area recently. According to information, the fracas started in the yard after her husband told her that he was going out for a while. The woman did not want him to leave and attacked him with a hammer.
On arrival the police ranks immediately went after the woman after hearing her shouting that she would kill the two children. They were just in time to see the woman trying to drown the baby.
She was eventually subdued, but not before she had wounded one of the ranks with a cutlass.
A female officer was also attacked.
According to information, the mother was taken to the Fort Wellington Hospital from where she was referred to the National Psychiatric Hospital.
It was also reported that the woman had attacked her husband a few days earlier with a cutlass following a misunderstanding.
However relatives of the woman are accusing the police of being too aggressive and of harassing the woman.
The children are reportedly in the custody of the Child Care and Protection Agency (CCPA) which is conducting investigations.
