NAWF Girls U-17 Inter-Secondary Schools Football…
Uitvlugt Secondary were crowned champions of the National Association of Women Football (NAWF) Under-17 eight-team Inter Secondary School tournament following a hard fought penalty kicks win over Leonora on Saturday last at the Den Amstel Community Centre Ground.
St. John’s emerged as the third best team in the third place playoff, their win also coming after a penalty shootout.
Uitvlugt could have made things much easier but muffed a chance from the penalty spot in the 47th minute following a handled ball in the area by a Leonora player; Shontell Greene stepped up to take the shot but was thwarted by Leonora’s goalkeeper, Oniesha Samuels.
Regulation time ended 0-0 and the ensuing penalty kicks saw Uitvlugt prevailing 4-2. In the third place game, St. John’s came out on top 2-0 over Stewartville after penalty kicks were employed to decide the winner after regulation time failed to separate the two sides.
At the presentation, the Most Improved Player award went to Sherika Harvey of St. John’s Secondary; Mandy Dainty of Leonora Secondary copped the Most Valuable Player accolade and also ended as the Highest Goal Scorer of the tournament, while the Best Goalkeeper award went to another Leonora player, Oniesha Samuels.
The organisers are expressing gratitude to the following sponsors for their contributions: Guyana Football Federation, Demerara Harbour Bridge Corporation, New GPC, Eton Cordis and NAWF President, Vanessa Dickenson.
