As the Preliminary Inquiry (PI) into the death of former Swiss House Cambio Managing Director Farouk Razac continued at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, the dead man’s 15-year-old daughter was one of the two witnesses yesterday called to testify on behalf of the State.
The teen took the stand with confidence and offered a sworn testimony in the pretrial matter.
Her mother, Carolan Lynch, is for the second time facing a murder charge in relation to her father’s death which occurred on May 7, 2007 at their Lot 106 Ireng Place, Bel Air Park, Georgetown residence.
Ever since the commencement of the Preliminary Inquiry last week, Lynch has maintained her poise. She always sits composed in the prisoners’ dock during every hearing.
Yesterday, as was the case in every other hearing, the former beauty queen sat with legs crossed as she faced the Chief Magistrate and listened attentively as every witness was called to testify.
There was, however, a break in her cool, calm and collective disposition. Lynch appeared happy to see her daughter. She stared lovingly at the teen as she testified and aptly responded to the questions of the Prosecution.
On the day Razac met his demise, his lifeless body was reportedly found lying on the bedroom floor with blood oozing from his mouth. The post mortem examination showed that the businessman died as a result of asphyxiation (suffocation) due to possible ligature strangulation.
Four days later, Lynch was charged with his murder but in 2008, the first Preliminary Inquiry (PI) ended when the then Magistrate Gordon Gilhuys discharged the accusations, citing that insufficient evidence had been provided to establish a case of murder against her.
Ever since the 2008 discharge of the matter, the charge, which in 2010 was ordered to be reinstituted against Lynch by the Director of Public Prosecutions, was only read to her on January 22, last. She had evaded the police for three years.
The Preliminary Inquiry got underway Tuesday last in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court and is scheduled to be called again today before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.
Lynch is being represented by Defence Attorneys Peter Hugh and Latchmie Rahamat. The case is being prosecuted by Corporal Bharat Mangru, who is attached to the Chambers of the Director of Public Prosecutions.
At the commencement last Tuesday, the court heard sworn testimonies from the couple’s friend Sharon Sanmogan; their fitness trainer, Karan Dutt; surveillance system technician Joseph Chung; and her brother Robert Lynch, (Junior).
On Wednesday last, her parents Robert (Senior) and Edith Lynch as well as her niece Melissa Watson were called to testify on behalf of the state. Detective Inspector Ray Inniss stationed at the Alberttown Police Station Criminal Investigations Division also took the stand.
On Friday last, Sergeant Lillian Scotland stationed at the Brickdam Police Station Criminal Investigations Division and Fazeel Razac, brother of the deceased, were called to testify.
In addition to the teen’s account yesterday, Sergeant Scotland was recalled.
So far, 11 witnesses have testified. Lynch’s lawyer, Hugh asked about the remaining witnesses.
Corporal Mangru, in response, indicated that he has information with regards to two of the witnesses and has been making efforts to contact the other witnesses via telephone calls and radio messages. He recorded that Saturday last, he personally made efforts to contact the remaining witnesses but his efforts were unsuccessful.
Inspector Charles and Sergeant Scott are scheduled to take the stand, today. Twenty one witnesses are expected to testify on behalf of the state.
