The Guyana Police Force yesterday announced that Senior Superintendent of Police, Clifton Hicken, will take up the post of, A-Division Commander. However, this move by the hierarchy of the force isn’t sitting well with the Opposition Leader, David Granger. The A-Division post covers the largest police district in Guyana.
Granger yesterday told Kaieteur News that he was “deeply concerned” about this. According to Granger, the Linden Commission of Inquiry had made several recommendations after finding that the Police were responsible for the gunning down of the three Linden protesters.
He said that the police force has failed to act on the Commission’s report. It was reported by several eyewitnesses that Commander Hicken was one of many police officers who fired “live rounds” into the crowds at Linden.
Hicken was the Commander of E&F Division during the Linden protest in 2012. The protest left three persons dead and dozens injured after police opened fire on protesters. Hicken is taking over ‘A’ Division from former Assistant Police Commissioner George Vyphuis; who retired last week after serving some 35 years in the Guyana Police Force.
Granger was also asked about whether he would support the appointment of the Acting Police Commissioner, Seelall Persaud. According to the Opposition Leader he has had correspondence with President Donald Ramotar.
Granger said that he pointed out to the President that the Police Service Commission has to be properly constituted.
Granger said that it would be very prejudicial for him to participate in consultation with an improperly constituted commission, adding that when the time comes he will further examine it.
