A number of old age pensioners residing on the Essequibo Coast were turned away after they were informed that there was insufficient money to pay them.
Pensioners who visited the Danielstown Post Office Saturday morning were told by the Postmaster that there was no money in store to pay them. These pensioners were told to revisit the office, at Danielstown on Saturday to uplift their pension payments for April.
Former Alliance For Change councillor, Francis Darchiville, who was among those pensioners, explained that he visited the office Saturday morning and after inquiring about his old age pension for the month of April, was told that there was not sufficient monies to pay pensioners.
Darchiville said he visited the said Post Office on Friday and was told to return the following day for payments. He said that he was further told to return the following week, after he learnt that monies were not available at that branch.
He said that while he understands that the Postmaster does not have control over the shortage of funds to pay pensioners, he is more concerned about his colleagues who would have had to travel to Danielstown and sit and wait before being sent away empty handed.
Darchiville said that most of the people he saw waiting at the Post Office Saturday morning were there because they have need for their pensions. He said that pensioners should not be treated in this shoddy manner. The relevant authorities should correct the situation, he added.
A senior member of the Postal Services said that while he has no knowledge of the issue relating to the non-payment of a number of pensioners, he was not sure why pensioners were told to return on Saturday after they would have visited the Office on Friday and still be turned away.
The situation at hand needs to be immediately corrected as pensioners are solely reliant on their monthly payments.
