– Linden tops ‘Mecca to Mackenzie’
The question was asked and the answer was a resounding no in the “From Mecca to Mackenzie” Basketball Playoffs; Georgetown did not beat Linden in Linden! A draw in the featured national title rematch was the only positive result for Georgetown.
Linden’s Kings and Amelia Ward Jets had set up the night for a clean sweep in the Mining Town Saturday night at the Mackenzie Sports Club Court, before sudden rain halted the Dyna’s Ravens vs Retrieve Raiders game near the end of the third quarter.
‘Lindeners’ came out in their numbers to support their respective teams, which certainly felt the sixth man presence with Kings beginning with a 53-51 victory over Georgetown’s Pacesetters in a game that featured the two League leaders in both towns.
Forward, Abdulla Hamid scored 15 points for Kings with guard, Steve Neils Jr. adding 13 points and Omally Sampson 11 points. For the opposing Pacesetters, guard Travis Burnett had 18 points with forward Randy Richardson scoring 13 points.
The win for Kings set the tone for the home teams in Linden with the Playoffs hype asking what the most essential question became: can Georgetown beat Linden in Linden? Amelia’s Ward Jets followed suit with a 68-62 victory that reinvigorated the town.
The Jets rematch of the national third place playoff against Colts continued what was a pulsating night of basketball, giving Linden two wins in two games in the grudge contests. Jets’ guard and University of Guyana standout, guard Emmanuel Archibald dazzled the massive crowd that thronged the outdoor venue with his skill and finishing ability.
Archibald took on the Colts formidable backcourt for 16 points while Alistair Webster scored 15 points and Shane Webster 13 points. Colts triple-threat, Shelroy Thomas, Nikkoloi Smith and the national guard prospect, Dave Causway had 14, 14 and 16 points respectively.
Jets’ senior guard, Kevin Joseph scored five straight points, including a three-point jumper and a lay-up to put Jets up 41-38 near the end of the third quarter. This is of course, after Colts had led 15-3 early in the game. Who would have thought of a meltdown? After all, Colts had beaten the Jets unit to take third place at the National Club Championships.
With five minutes to play, Jets went up 50-45 with Webster finishing a layup, but then Causway stole the ball and finished for a 55-55 deadlock with 4:50 to play. However, Jets went on a run in the last three minutes of the game with Archibald leading them to victory.
With two on the trot for Linden, the hype, talk and fanfare began leading into the final game with the hope of salvaging some pride for Georgetown squarely resting on the shoulders of Ravens, an unmistakably good team and current National Club Champions.
However, with Ravens leading 42-30 and 34 seconds left in the third quarter, sudden rain forced a drawn game with Ravens and Raiders splitting the prize money. Ryan Gullen had 17 points for Ravens while Lawrence DeCosta had 11 points for Raiders.
The capacity crowd at the MSC Court witnessed an evening of breathtaking basketball before the rains intervened. The winners took home $50,000 and trophy, while the losing teams got $25,000 with comedian, Chow Pow as host of the inaugural competition.
Sports Management Inc. planned and managed the event with support from Ansa McAl under its Stag Beer brand, Paladin Security and Michael Singh, Haslyn Graham, President of the Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation, Nigel Hinds, Troy Mendonca, Lennox Cush, Courts and Trophy Stall of Bourda Market.
