Dear Editor,
Every single night ranks of different units are conducting unnecessary and inhospitable roadblocks at the western end of the Demerara Harbour Bridge.
Some of these ranks who are supervised by an officer decked in khaki uniform are openly rude. Sometimes take advantage of lone female drivers.
One young lady who works in town and journeys across the bridge every night complained of being stopped and asked for her papers almost every night.
One night besides asking for her documents she was asked where she was going and where she worked, the next night she was asked if she was married and one of the ranks even remarked how she was ‘sexy’. This is the kind of behavior the public has to put up with the uncouth ranks of the Guyana Police Force.
The lady is thinking of not driving over the bridge in the evenings.
Some of the ranks are openly soliciting by saying “Left something for de boys”.
I would like to know why roadblocks are conducted at one spot every night. Is this standard police procedure?
