– Dolphin clinch third place
As predicted, the final of this year’s Milo/Petra Organisation Schools Football Competition was a riveting slugfest that produced a new champion in Lodge Secondary who outlasted defending champions St. George’s to win 1-0 yesterday, before a crowded Ministry of Education ground on Carifesta Avenue.
Captain of new champions Lodge Secondary School Jarel Grannum (centre) receives the winning trophy from Milo Representative Renita Sital in the presence of teammates and other officials yesterday.
It took a Ryan Hackett strike in the 36th minute of the game to separate the two gladiators that thrilled fans with some fantastic football that won the approval of everyone with many exclaiming that football was the true winner.
Hackett, goal came through a neat piece of play which saw a long ball from the central mid-field that landed on the right side of the St. George’s defence, forcing their goalkeeper to come off his line in an effort to make the interception, but Lodge won the possession and a pass from right to left found the St. George’s custodian and defence stranded, leaving Hackett unmarked and he lashed home from the left side into an empty net.
The champions responded with venom, but Most Valuable Player Jamal Scott was equal to the task as he singlehandedly repelled the ferocious onslaught.
The defending champions went down fighting as they created at least four chances, but luck was just not on their side as two one on one opportunities saw some poor finishing from their star striker Robby McClaggon, while two other efforts slammed into the upright and crossbar respectively to sum up their night, before the final whistle sounded to send the Lodge supporters into euphoric celebrations.
Earlier, Dolphin eased to a comfortable 2-0 win over Christ Church with Dequan Matthews firing in a brace in the 23rd and 47th minutes of play to claim third place.
Most Valuable Player of the Tournament Lodge’s Jamal Scoot collects his trophy from Ministry of Health official Trevor Thomas last evening.
Lodge Coach Leon Bishop was voted the Best Coach, Marlon Nedd of Carmel was the tournament’s Highest Goalscorer, while Queenstown was voted the Most Disciplined School.
The winning team carted off $500,000 that will go towards a Project of their choice, while the runner-up received $300,000, 3rd place-$200,000 and 4th place $100,000.
