Touted the most progressive lot on the East Bank Demerara Public Road four-lane expansion project, the roadway from Covent Garden to Demerara Distiller’s Limited ‘high bridge’ is expected to conclude by August month-end.
This is according to Komal Singh, Managing Director/ Owner of GAICO Construction & General
Services during a recent interview with this publication.
The contract for the construction of this section of roadway along with the two other lots was signed on October 3, 2011. The project was expected to conclude within 18 months, but was rescheduled.
The contractor was tasked with transforming the section of canefields into roadway that will link lots one and three at Prospect and Demerara Distiller’s Limited ‘high bridge’ respectively; building footbridges; and upgrading the existing western carriageway.
Thus far, the contractor has completed constructing the footbridges and transforming the canefields into a roadway. The contractor is currently building bridges to link two canals to complete the eastern carriageway and is installing concrete drains on the western thoroughfare.
Commenting on ongoing works on the eastern carriageway, Singh said his team has to install concrete deck slabs on the two bridges in that section. The contractor is in the process of putting pre-stress concrete deck slabs on the first bridge. Following the completion of this bridge by next week, the contractor will commence asphalting this section of roadway.
The pre-stress concrete deck slabs were procured from the United States of America but the material for the other bridge is being sourced locally, Singh said.
“We already drove piles for the second bridge…And, by the end of April we are hoping to put decking on that one also,” he added.
When those works are completed, the eastern roadway would be opened for traffic to allow construction on the western carriageway. This is expected to be in place by April month-end or early May.
