Vryman’s Erven Secondary School (VESS) drubbed Canje Secondary School (CSS) 6-0 when second-round action in the Berbice leg of the Scotiabank/Pepsi Schools Football tournament continued on Thursday at the Esplanade Park in New Amsterdam.
The lads from VESS smarting from their first round defeat against Tutorial Academy Secondary (TASS) completely dominated the match.
Dexter Welcome opened the scoring in the 21st minute and with Toshawn Morris netting in the 29th minute VESS went to half time with a 2-0 lead.
The pattern continued in the second half with Kevin Williams scoring in the 40th and 45th minutes as his team took a 4-0 advantage. Giovanni Rover then added two more in the 60th and 70th minutes to round out a good match for the winners.
The competition continues on Tuesday with the two unbeaten teams TASS and Berbice Educational Institute (BEI) clashing in what is expected to be a close encounter at the Esplanade Park in New Amsterdam.
Meanwhile, earlier in the week Berbice High School (BHS) rebounded from their first round loss to defeat New Amsterdam Multilateral School (NAMS) 2-0.
BHS who are the defending Berbice champions played a better organized game than in their first encounter to hand NAMS their first defeat. After dominating the first half, BHS opened the scoring in the 42nd minute when Rawle Bourne netted from long range as he caught the goalkeeper napping. The probing BHS unit went further ahead when Shamar Arendele latched onto a loose ball following a goal mouth scrimmage in the 62nd minute to make it 2-0. The NAMS team was once again without their assigned coach Keith O’Jeer, who has never showed up for a match.
And action continues this weekend. Today at the Ministry of Education Ground. Females will be in action from 09:30 hrs when Campbellville Secondary and North Georgetown Secondary clash and at 11:00 hrs Lodge Secondary will come up against Tutorial High.
Tomorrow, males will be in action – at 09:30 hrs Christ Church Secondary and Bishops High will clash, at 11:00 hrs – Campbellville Secondary and St George’s High will collide and at 12:30 hrs, Queen’s College and Chase Academy will bring the curtains down. (Samuel Whyte)
