Linden Secondary Schools U-19 basketball starts Monday…
A number of former Linden residents have thrown their support for the staging of the 10th annual Linden Secondary Schools Under-19 Basketball championship which bounces off on Monday at the Mackenzie Sports Club hard court in Linden.
The schools contesting this year’s tournament are the defending champions Christianburg Wismar Secondary, Mackenzie High, New Silvercity Secondary, Linden Foundation Secondary, Wisburg Secondary and Linden Technical Institute.
The Linden Amateur Basketball Association stated that former National Women’s Coach, Linden Alphonso, has continued to spearhead the drive to maintain the championship for the tenth year running after he started it with his former Club Victory Valley Royals. Over the years, Alphonso, who is now resident in the United States, was able to have former residents and players give back by way of sponsorship to the Linden championship.
Alphonso has already acquired the various trophies and replicas, medals, Championship T Shirts and All Star T-Shirts along with basketballs for the tournament which will see six secondary schools contesting.
The sponsors have been with the tournament over the past nine years and continue to give their donations for the championship this time around.
The overseas sponsors are Marlon Josiah, who once again is sponsoring the winning Trophy and replicas, Orin Louison the runner-up trophy and replicas, Kenneth Chapman the third place trophy and replicas, Lennox Allicock the fourth place trophy and medals, while Alphonso is the donor for the Most Valuable Player of the final and Maxi Stephens the sponsor for the many individual awards at stake including the best rebounder and Most Points in the final trophies.
Also the Championship T-Shirts are donated by Sylvester Mann and the All Star T-Shirts by Louis Webster, while
the basketballs to be used for the championship were donated by Leon Moe.
The championship which starts on Monday will conclude during the Linden Town week celebrations and play is expected every Monday, Wednesday and Friday for ten playing days.
