Three middle aged men were yesterday brought before the city court charged with a number of interior shop break-ins.
Troy Leacock, Morris Davis and Sherwin Leonard appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court to answer charges of Break and Enter and Larceny charges.
Leacock, a labourer of Kwakwani Park was accused of breaking and entering Bertram Welcome’s shop in Kwakwani and stealing $40,000 in cash some time between March 21 and March 22.
Davis, a construction worker from Angoy’s Avenue, New Amsterdam, Berbice was charged for breaking into Abdool Wanab’s shop in Roraima sometime between March 23 and March 25 and stealing $54,000 worth in items.
The items listed in that charge included female underwear, deodorants, tee-shirts, male boxers, female accessories as well as perfumes.
Davis and Leonard were also jointly indicted for burgling Iola Hanes’ shop in Arima some time between March 30 and March 31 and making off with a large quantity of food items including flour, sugar, rice, biscuits, juices and other beverages which amounted to almost $50,000.
When asked to respond to the charges, the three men pleaded not guilty and asked the Chief Magistrate to consider granting them bail.
The case was being prosecuted by Inspector Michael Grant who offered no objections to bail.
He explained that all the shop owners on different occasions had secured their entity before venturing to the city. When they returned the next day, however, they discovered that their shops were broken into and the items stolen.
The matters were reported and acting on information, the police apprehended the three men. The Chief Magistrate then ordered statements to be filed in each of the cases and transferred them to the Kwakwani Magistrate’s Court.
Bail was granted to Davis in the sum of $75,000 for the break in on Wanab’s shop in Roraima.
Davis and Leonard were granted $50,000 on the joint charge since there are currently no statements on file implicating them and the articles lost were unmarked. For his single charge, Leacock will have to post $75,000 bail.
The cases are set to be called at the Kwakwani Magistrate’s Court on April 14.
