Teen remanded on drug peddling charge

A teenage boy who was busted with marijuana hidden in his crotch two days ago was brought before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry and remanded to prison on a drug peddling charge yesterday.
Andre Christian yesterday appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court and was charged for trafficking 33 grams of cannabis.
On April 3, Christian was apprehended at the Stabroek Market area by police ranks on patrol who noticed him behaving in what was described as a suspicious manner.
State Prosecutor, Inspector Michael Grant explained that the ranks stopped and searched him. During the search, they found a transparent plastic bag hidden in the front of his pants which contained a quantity of leaves, seeds and stems.
He explained that Christian was taken to the Brickdam Police Station where the substance was weighed and the charges were instituted against him.
He pleaded not guilty when the charge was read to him and submitted an application for bail through Defence Attorney Paul Fung-a-Fat.
Christian was however remanded to prison. The matter was transferred to Magistrate Faith McGusty’s court who scheduled the trial to commence on May 8.
