A self-employed teenaged boy who hails from Wiruni in the Upper Berbice River was yesterday brought before the courts charged with setting his mother’s kitchen afire.
Eighteen-year-old Dwayne Jones appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates Court and pleaded not guilty to a charge of setting fire to a building, but the court presided over by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry ordered him held until his next court date.
State Prosecutor, Inspector Michael Grant explained that ten days ago (March 23), the teen was out imbibing alcohol with a few friends and returned home around 17:30 hours.
According to the Prosecutor, following an argument which erupted between him and his mother, he threw the lighted kerosene stove on the kitchen floor causing the structure to burst into flames
The matter was reported and subsequent investigations led to the charge being instituted against Jones.
Jones was remanded to prison and the case is set to be called again on April 14 at the Kwakwani Magistrates’ Court.
