A ‘New Moon’ Service last week Monday evening (March 31) was the occasion to usher in the Hebrew New Year. The venue was The Hebrew Family of Guyana Cultural Center located at 3619 Christiani Street, North Ruimveldt,
A missive from the Hebrew Family of Guyana pointed out that the New Year begins in the Hebrew month of Aviv which means “spring”. Added to this it was noted that the Passover Season is the first Holy Season in the New Year.
It is the Hebrew Family’s belief that the children of Israel were delivered from bondage in Egypt at this time by Almighty God. As a result, “our ancestors are commanded to keep a memorial Passover throughout our generations forever.”
“It is an occasion to reflect and remember the wonderful and awesome acts wrought by the Creator of heaven and earth on behave of our forefathers. We must recall on each Passover and Feast of Unleavened Bread how The Most High emancipated and redeemed us from the hand of Pharaoh and cruel bondage. Yah granted our people their independence,” a statement informed.
Moreover, in commemoration of this auspicious occasion Hebrew Israelites and thousands of other people worldwide seek to observe the Passover night Feast and the Feast of Unleavened Bread for seven days.
The Passover meal comprises of lamb/goat, unleavened bread and bitter herbs. This tradition saw the blood of the lambs being placed on the lentil and doorpost to prevent the angel of death from entering the homes of the Children of Israel.
The unleavened bread represents the fact that “our rise and freedom was an act of The Almighty. We had no power to rise. It also symbolized the haste in which our ancestors fled Egypt…Of course the bitter herbs remind us of the harsh vigorous toil and the cruelty of our enslavement,” according to the Hebrew Family.
In preparation for Passover spring cleaning is also required in all dwellings in fulfilment of removing all leavening out of sight. With a Passover meal the season is slated to begin on April 14, 2014, at dusk and end on the following morning at dawn.
However, the Seven days of eating unleavened bread commences on the evening of April 14 and ends April 21, 2014, which is the close out of this Memorial Season.
During this seven-day period Israelites and other observers must eat fresh foods daily. Foods which contain leavening are forbidden as well as processed and fermented foods.
And for those who are desirous of learning more about this tradition they can do so by contacting the Hebrew Family of Guyana.
