Quick action by police has led to the capture of two men who were caught stealing a toilet bowl set from an abandoned Ministry of Health building on Princes Street, Georgetown around 11:00 hrs yesterday.
The men in custody have been identified as Shawn Peters, 32, of 182 Calendar Street, Albouystown, and Lloyd Butler, 43, of 3365 South Ruimveldt.
According to a police source, they received a telephone call that two men, one wearing a mask, were in the deserted building, and were in the process of ripping out a toilet bowl from the location.
“When we arrived, they were in the building, so we surrounded it and we caught Butler. Peters ran from the location and we gave chase and caught up with him at Charles Street, Charlestown,” the source added.
Kaieteur News was told that both men are labourers, and they were planning to steal the toilet set to sell it to a contractor.
However, their efforts to make a living by stealing were thwarted by ranks on patrol. At the scene, Peters gave a different version of the story. He said that he and his wife had a fight early yesterday and he walked out of the house. He claimed that it was while walking on Charles Street, the police arrived and opened fire on him.
“Dem beat me in meh head. Me just went walking and dem beat me,” Peters cried.
Butler and Peters are now in police custody.
