On July 11, 2012, I did a column with the above caption (minus the words “I repeat” of course). It was about the dishonest and sickening journalism of a man nearing his eightieth birthday – Guyanese journalist Rickey Singh. There is an old reflection that obtains throughout the world.
It is about people growing old and by old, I mean getting into their eighties and nineties. As you look at them doing nasty things, you would say, “In his old age, should he not make peace with his maker? It means the world expects when you are at that advanced age, you should be a peaceful person seeking a peaceful pathway for those you will leave behind.
When I look back at my young days, I wonder what makes people change so badly when you so admired them for their youthful courage and wonderful beliefs. I grew up admiring people like Forbes Burnham, Cheddi Jagan, Rickey Singh. They were Guyanese heroes to young teenagers. But look at the flawed creatures they turned out to be.
Rickey Singh lived next to my sister on Norton and Haley Streets in Wortmanville. He was very sympathetic when my sister’s lover violently abused her. Then he became a national figure of admiration after he began to criticize the authoritarian direction of Burnham. He fled Guyana in the mid-seventies and took up residence in Barbados where he has since lived.
Since 1992, he has been a paid columnist with the Guyana Chronicle, writing a Sunday column. He has also served as a consultant to the Chronicle, is a consultant to the Guyana Times and was an advisor to the PPP on its election campaign in 2001. Mr. Singh is a blatant hypocrite, in that the things he castigated the Burnham Government for, the Jagdeo cabal and to a lesser extent the Ramotar regime practice in more depraved modes.
I stopped reading Singh a long time ago. I even penned a column criticizing UWI for awarding him an honorary doctorate. In this world any fool can be given a monarchial title as the one the champion got from the UN.
Last Sunday, I was on my way to West Bank Demerara when I had to return to Georgetown because the Harbour Bridge was closed. I was going to the symposium on the state of African Guyanese people.
To kill time until the bridge was open to traffic, I stopped in at Kaieteur News offices. I asked Mike Baptiste for the Guyana Times and Chronicle, newspapers that I haven’t laid eyes on for years, and I mean years. I occasionally read them on the internet but very infrequently. Baptiste suggested I go to the desk of Gary Eleazar for the newspapers.
The Rickey Singh column for that Sunday was extremely nauseating. I suggest to avoid invocation of anger don’t read it. The column is a sarcastic critique of the opposition after what Singh describes as a poll the opposition did that shows that Bharrat Jagdeo would win the elections by a majority.
Singh is the only man in the world that believes the opposition parties did such poll and factored into the questionnaire a variable on Mr. Jagdeo.
Not only is Singh a hypocrite, but an incompetent propagandist. Even the PPP has cast doubt on the existence of such a survey. How can Singh be a commentator on Caribbean affairs and he does not read about the things that go on in Guyana. Yet he writes about Guyana.
That poll was so clumsy and stupid that no one in this land believes that the opposition undertook such a survey.
But wait! There is more to come from the comical pen of this eighty-year-old PPP propagandist. He said the poll results are identical to those done by NACTA? Only two persons in this world know that an organization named NACTA does polling. The two are Rickey Singh and Vishnu Bisram.
Of course the two know each other very well, but I will reveal a secret about Singh at the end of this column. Only Singh does not know that no one from NACTA can tell the newspapers who or what is NACTA, so the Kaieteur News and Stabroek News have refused to carry the results of the surveys done by this bogus organization named NACTA.
Singh tells us that because the opposition poll shows that Jagdeo would win, the PPP is now inclined to hold a snap election. Singh puts the date in November. Why is Rickey Singh so sycophantic over the PPP all these years? A few years back, the Jagdeo regime did an immense favour for Singh. Do you know what it is?
