Dear Sir,
Yesterday was April 1, which is universally known as ALL FOOLS DAY. I was surprised that nothing was mentioned about it. Maybe it is a good thing especially since there is a budget debate.
What I really want to speak about is the saying which is common among Lawyers that says “A Lawyer who has himself as a Client, has a Fool for a Client”. This statement is so applicable when one looks at the issues the Government and the opposition are involved in.
Firstly there is always talk that the government is a minority Government and the Opposition has a majority of one in Parliament. The PPPC is the party with the individual majority of seats over both the PNCR and the AFC. Therefore it is correct that the PPPC should elect the President.
However it seems logical to me that the AFC and PNCR should have formed the Government and not the PPPC. Take for instance the U.S.A, the President is elected but the Senate which consists of mainly Democrats and Republicans is controlled by the majority of its members, not necessarily the President regardless of which party elected the President. Both Guyana and the United States of America have written Constitutions.
However is seems that in Guyana the Constitution permits the President to determine who must run the Government, and is advised by the Attorney General who is part of his flock.
Do you feel that the old saying “A Lawyer who has himself as a client has a fool for a client”?
If what I have outlined makes sense I call upon the Civil Society to take action right away. Come on Guyana Trust, Red Thread Karen De Souza of Deborah-Backer ilk, Nation Dr. Philip of Guyana National Council on Public Policy and Mr. Urling, the outgoing President of a popular Civic Society.
