Three men – a vendor, a labourer and a miner – were yesterday remanded by a senior Magistrate for breaking into a popular Water Street business entity and carting off more than $2M worth of electronic items.
Joshua Meredith, 20, of Queen Street, South Cummingsburg; Dennis Downer, 24, of Rosemary Lane, Georgetown; and Delon Halley, 24, of Water and Holmes Street; are charged with breaking into the store of Harish Baxani on Water Street, Georgetown, between March 26 and March 27.
According to the charge, during the break in they stole $2,466,000 worth of flat screen television sets, a $21,000 microwave and a $28,000 speaker box; all of which belonged to Harish Baxani.
When asked to respond to the charge, they all pleaded not guilty and submitted an application for reasonable bail through their lawyer, Paul Fung-a-Fat.
Inspector Michael Grant, the prosecutor, explained that on March 26, Baxani secured his store and ventured home. Around 03:30 hours the next morning, however, he received a telephone call informing him that his store was being burgled.
He stated that Baxani and the police arrived at the scene before the trio could have escaped.
Grant said the three men attempted to escape but the police chased after them and found seven of the television sets in their possession.
According to the Prosecution, the three men had previously been charged and placed before the courts. He offered objections to them being granted their pretrial liberty citing the prevalence of the offence.
The police are currently investigating other matters of a similar nature committed on the said store earlier this year, the Inspector said. He added that there is the possibility of more charges being leveled against the three men.
The Chief Magistrate, in response, upheld the objections of the Prosecution and denied the trio bail. They will appear in court again on April 15.
