Onica Cumberbatch, the mother of the 10-year-old boy, who was found hanging on Saturday, is refuting reports that her young son had attempted suicide.
The woman instead claims that her son was playing with the belt, when he almost “accidentally hanged himself.”
“My sons were playing in the yard and I was inside cleaning up, when my older son come and tell me to come and see what his brother doing…
I went and found him hanging with his tongue out his head and froth coming out his mouth. It scared me because there is no explanation for it. But my son loves to climb and apparently hung the belt on the lines to create a loop, he hook it around his chin and swinging on it when the loop tightened…
“I am thankful that his feet wasn’t far off the ground,” Onica Cumberbatch explained.
“I am quite upset because no one from the media ever really spoke with me. I would have liked to have my say to explain properly.”
Cumberbatch, a housewife and mother of four, from North Sophia, said that she quickly took her son to seek medical attention the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, (GPHC).
“When, I arrived at the hospital, I made a statement to the police and I also went to the Prashad Nagar Outpost to make another statement. I was really scared but I am thankful that my son is doing much better now.
“He is not talking much but we are awaiting the report from the probation office before everything returns to normal.”
He is currently a patient of the Paediatric Ward at GPHC. The Child Care and Protection Agency, CCPA are conducting investigations into the matter.
