A man accused of murder and spending his time on remand was yesterday found guilty by a city Magistrate and given a three-year jail term on a drug related charge in relation to the Camp Street prison drug bust which occurred earlier this year.
While being held in custody for murder, Randall Forde was charged for being in possession of 12.5 grams of cannabis.
Yesterday, he appeared before Magistrate Judy Latchman at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, where he was told that coupled with his sentence, he will also pay a fine of $18,750 for the crime.
On February 28, he was returning from a court hearing at the Bartica Magistrate’s Court to the Camp Street prison facility when he was busted.
State Prosecutor, Inspector Joel Ricknauth explained that upon arrival, a prison officer searched his bag and found a pack of “sealed” ‘corn curls’.
He said, however, a further search on the snack unearthed a small plastic bag hidden inside. It contained a quantity of leaves, seeds and stems suspected to be marijuana.
According to Inspector Ricknauth, the officer made a report to the police and Forde was subsequently charged for the offence.
On March 4, he appeared before the courts and pleaded not guilty.
