An unemployed man who hails from Grove, East Bank Demerara has been sentenced to prison by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry after he admitted that he tried to rob a woman a few days ago.
Sheriff Ahmad, 30, faced the city court for attempting to rob Jennifer Asram of her $62,000 Pantec cellular phone on High Street, Werk-en-Rust, five days ago.
Ahmad Police Prosecutor Michael Grant explained that about 09:05 hours that day, the victim was walking along High Street with her phone in her hand when Ahmad walked up to her and snatched it.
The woman, however, reacted and they ended up in a scuffle. During the fracas, she raised an alarm to which police ranks and public spirited citizens reportedly responded.
Grant said that Ahmad attempted to run away but the group managed to apprehend him. The matter was reported and the charge was subsequently laid against him. He informed the court that Ahmad was previous convicted on two simple larceny charges.
Ahmad expressed regret for his actions and begged the court for leniency. The Chief Magistrate, in response, sentenced him to 18 months’ imprisonment.
