A man who, earlier this year was busted with marijuana hidden in his crotch, was yesterday sentenced to three years’ imprisonment by a city Magistrate after he was found guilty of drug trafficking.
Orlando James was charged in February for trafficking 25.5 grams of cannabis.
Yesterday, he appeared before Magistrate Fabayo Azore at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, where he was told that coupled with his sentence, he will also pay a fine of $10,000.
On February 6, James was apprehended on Freeman Street, East La Penitence, by police ranks on cycle patrol. They had seen him on his pedal cycle behaving in what was described as a suspicious manner.
State Prosecutor, Corporal Aduni Inniss, explained that the ranks stopped and searched him. During the search, they found a black plastic bag hidden in the front of his pants. It contained a quantity of leaves, seeds and stems.
She explained that within that bag, there were several smaller Zip-lock bags with the said substance.
Inniss said that that man was told of the offence, cautioned and arrested. The substance was then weighed and charges were instituted against him.
On February 10, he appeared before the courts and pleaded not guilty when the charge was read to him. However, the trial concluded and he was found guilty of the crime.
