One of the country’s biggest housing schemes remains under-developed with several issues including crime, affecting residents.
According to the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR), several areas of concerns were expressed by residents on Saturday at Four Corners, La Parfaite Harmonie, during a meeting involving several top leaders of that Party.
The community on the West Bank of Demerara is said to be the
largest new housing scheme in the country, after Diamond, with more expansion taking place. The area has not been handed over to the local neighbourhood democratic council as yet.
Speakers at the meeting included Members of Parliament Joseph Harmon, Annette Ferguson, Cheryl Sampson, PNCR Central Executive Member; and Brigadier David Granger, Leader of the PNCR.
“They (residents) spoke about the poor roads; the lack of adequate street lighting and the high costs of transportation, especially for school children to get to and from school.”
According to PNCR, other problems facing the community include poor security and the lack of adequate policing. Property theft and poor local representation and concerns with the national and regional education system were also dealt with.
During the meeting, Harmon also updated residents on the Anti-Money Laundering amendment legislation and A Partnership for National Unity’s (APNU) work in the Parliamentary Special Select Committee. APNU is the largest Opposition faction in the National Assembly with PNCR as a major component.
Mr. Harmon told the crowd that it was the Opposition that was working to protect the citizens of Guyana and to have strong, enforceable laws to apprehend money launderers.
Sampson and Ferguson also touched on local government issues affecting Region Three.
According to Granger, his party is preparing for local government elections with registration ongoing.
“Brigadier Granger said that it was only through local government elections that residents in places like La Parfaite Harmonie would be able to get involved in managing and developing the communities where they live,” PNCR said.
According to the Opposition Leader, the 2014 Budget was not forward-looking or development oriented with no plans for poverty reduction, employment and social protection. Brigadier Granger said the 2014 Budget does not provide realistic job opportunities for the thousands of school-leavers and the larger number of unemployed and under-employed.
Under the PPP/C, the “few rich are getting richer and the many poor are getting poorer.”
The meeting at La Parfaite Harmonie was chaired by PNC/R Regional Chairman and APNU Member of Parliament, John Adams.
