A heavy shower helped the President’s X1 to a draw against Demerara at DCC yesterday on the second and final day of their Igloo Ice-Cream under-15 two-day cricket contest which was called off just after Lunch with the home team in a commanding position to force an innings victory.
Scores: President’s X1 (71 & 97-7), Demerara (235-4).
In 55 minutes available yesterday, the President’s X1 lost four wickets while adding 60 runs as the visitors were led by a quick-fire 57 from overnight batsman Christopher Campbell from 90 minutes, 71 balls and nine fours as he provided an entertaining period for the handful of spectators.
Off-spinner Sagar Hathiramani was again the architect of destruction with 3-17 to finish with match figures of 8-28 and leaving the visitors still 67 short of avoiding an innings defeat with just three wickets to fall. Joshua Persaud was named Man-of-the-Match for his magnificent century for Demerara.
The President’s X1 resumed on 37-3 in murky conditions and quickly lost Chandradat Veerasammy for a duck when he was bowled by pacer Colin Barlow at 41-4.
Khemchand Hardyal and Christopher Campbell added 33 for the fifth wicket before Hardyal sacrificed his wicket for the well entrenched Campbell and was run out for four at 74-5.
The left-handed Campbell from GNIC looked technically correct and was especially severe on medium pacer Bhojnarine Singh, caressing him delightfully through the covers and savagely pulling him to the mid-wicket boundary. An elegant whip off his legs reached the ropes in a hurry and climaxed an entertaining over which cost 13 runs.
Campbell repeated the dose in Singh’s next over which cost 12 and his third boundary of the over brought up Campbell’s 50 from just 46 balls with nine fours.
Just when he seemed set for a big score under dark, angry skies, Campbell, who began the day on 19, was removed at 95-6 by first innings destroyer Hathiramani who again tormented the batsmen with his clever off-spin.
Shivnarine Chattergoon was caught at mid-on for a duck as Hathiramani struck again without addition to the score before the skies opened up two runs later at 10:31hrs and sent the players dashing for cover.
Mark Ramsammy was unbeaten on 11, while Brandon Corlette was yet to score with their team still needing 67 to make the defending champions bat a second time.
Demerara collected six points for achieving a first innings lead while the draw ensured the President’s X1 got three points. Under the bonus points for fast bowlers taking wickets instituted by the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB), Demerara added another four points to their tally for taking four wickets with pace, while the President’s X1 got an additional point for
their lone wicket to pace.
According to the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) Competition’s Committee Chairman, Colin Europe, it was decided by the GCB to award one point for every wicket taken by a fast bowler instead of the .5 awarded at the Regional level. This was done to minimize confusion among the public.
Coach Julian Moore said it was unfortunate that rain spoiled the match but was grateful for the points gained by his team for the draw. “We had only one practice session together while the Berbice side was together for a while. You must remember that our team comprises of players from all three Counties which compounded the problem,” said Berbician Moore.
He however feels that his side has a good chance of winning the tournament since he has seen an improvement in the second innings which shows the youths are capable of competing although they were those who could not make their county sides.
“There is talent in the team and we have to work with them on a one-on-one basis and let them understand what it takes mentally to be successful as they go higher in their career. But that takes time and we don’t have that luxury in such a short tournament,” said Moore.
The tournament continues tomorrow and Thursday when the President’s X1 face Berbice at Wales and Demerara and Essequibo face-off at Enmore.
