In addition, to offering innovative training to individuals, who wish to pursue careers in the areas of science, business or technology, the Government Technical Institute, (GTI) is a pioneer in promoting projects of saving the environment.
As such, staff and students of GTI have embarked on educating various schools on the concept and benefits of recycling and waste separation, an initiative, which was recently implemented by Quality Assurance Committee and Science Department of the Institute.
The technical institute has implemented a waste separation initiative aimed at creating a safe and conducive teaching, learning and enhancing the overall atmosphere of school.
The process entails separation of aluminum cans and plastic bottles using a colour-coded system. This would mean that red garbage receptacles would contain aluminium cans, while the blue ones would be used for plastic bottles.
Students of GTI explained that after the various types of waste are separated, the reusable items are then transported to the University of Guyana to be recycled.
“This would be a part of another collaboration; this time with the Faculty of Technology – Recycling Group of the University. Several activities have been held to spread awareness about the implementation of the Initiative to fully sensitize students on the benefits of the project and to prevent the misuse of the receptacles and ensure that there is full understanding of the institution’s new disposal procedure.”
Addressing a gathering, during the recent open day event held at the school, Chairman of GTI Board of Governors, Norman Mc Lean noted that such initiatives are essential to promoting a safer cleaner environment for the institution and surrounding schools.
Mc Lean says that much emphasis has been placed on transforming Woolford Avenue into a model Education Street.
The waste separation programme is aimed at moving GTI one-step closer towards becoming an environmental friendly institution and steering its staff and trainees toward becoming well-rounded and environmentally-conscious members of society.
This newspaper understands that the administration has also encouraged other schools to adapt this initiative and create the awareness and culture of a clean school, and ultimately a clean society.
Several other activities aimed at further promoting the well being of the environment have initiated. The activities include Inter-departmental debating competitions, an Environmental March in the community, and an Inter-departmental quiz competition, intended for educating and informing persons, about the importance and benefits of practicing recycling.
