A young man from Foulis, Enmore on the East Coast of Demerara desperately wanted to impress his New York-based girlfriend that he concocted a plan to extort $3.5m from his parents by staging his own kidnapping.
But thanks to technology and diligent investigations by the police, his plans fell apart and he was promptly arrested and subsequently placed before the court yesterday.
Police say that Ramraj Singh, 19, was placed on $200,000 bail by Magistrate Zamena Ali when he appeared before her at the Vigilance Magistrate’s Court to answer to the charge of attempting to commit a felony to wit obtaining money by false pretence.
According to the police, last week Monday, Singh left his home, telling his parents that he was going to purchase phone cards. He did not return. The following day around 15:45 hours, his father who had become worried, reported to police that he was missing.
The father also told police that a few hours after his son left home, he received a telephone call from an anonymous caller, to the effect that his son had been kidnapped and a demand of $3.5M was made for his safe return.
The police in a statement issued to the media yesterday said that based on subsequent police investigations, including the tracking of phone calls, it was suspected that the “kidnapping” had been concocted.
“We contacted the telephone company and we kept tracking the calls. From the phone calls we were able to pinpoint the location it was coming from,” a police source on the East Coast of Demerara told this newspaper.
The source said that they immediately zeroed in on a location that they suspected the young man was holed up in. It turned out that it was the home of another relative.
“As a result, a sting operation was set up and the “kidnap victim” was arrested on March 26, last, as he turned up to pick up the “ransom money” at the agreed on location,” the police said in its statement.
“He wanted to go away. He wanted to marry a girl who lives in the USA,” the police source said.
Ramraj Singh is to return to court on April 14.
