Ron Smith continued to proudly fly the Golden Arrowhead when in a display of guts and grit he eked out a 2-1 verdict over Yancy Megange (Martinique) when they clashed in the 69kgs Elite category when semi-finals action in the Tri Nation Boxing Extravaganza concluded here in St Lucia at the Vigie Multi-purpose Complex, Saturday evening last. The victory represented the second successive one for Smith after he had won by a similar margin over St Lucian boxer, Ron Bastien on the opening night and he went for a clean sweep against another St Lucian, Nyran David, last night.
Bert Braithwaite could consider himself unlucky not to have won his 64kgs Elite return bout against St Lucian, Lynden ‘The Russian’ Marcellin, despite turning in the performance of his life. Matters were compounded when the St Lucian was awarded the bout by a majority verdict. Braithwaite received one more chance to turn the tables when the two pugilists clashed last night in the last of the trilogy.
Elite 56kgs contender, Delon Charles, won his first bout against St Lucian, Joshua Duberry but got a reprieve from fistic duty after he was rested in the semi-finals but was scheduled to return to action last night against Gervais Capron of Martinique.
Smith dominated his bout against Megange from the first gong with crisp one two combinations while dancing out of range from his opponent’s retaliation. Megange attempted to lure Smith into a brawl but the Guyanese declined, opting instead to pick his punches from long range. Megange seemed not to be able to employ sound counteracting strategies and Smith literally enjoyed a field day, throwing punches at will.
Most of Megange’s punches were poorly timed but he eventually received an opportunity to unleash some of his bombs when Smith, who appeared to be tired from his earlier aggression, slowed down somewhat in the third stanza. A vicious toe to toe battle ensued but tired as he was, Smith refused to relinquish control and the bell sounded with the two pugilists locked in vicious warfare.
When the decision was announced in Smith’s favour, Megange and his entourage erupted, claiming that they were ‘done in.’ This was a similar display by the same group after Megange was declared the loser in his fight against St Lucian, Nyran David one night earlier. That decision had also sparked controversy with Megange’s trainers vociferously crying foul and forcing the intervention of IABA referee, James Beckles to quell the dispute.
