Alisha Fortune, Denzelyn Clarke & Nadina Taharally are female winners
The Category winners in the Overall Showdown from right, Alex Hamilton, Mr. HRC 2014 Kerwin Clarke, Sylvester Andrews, Marlon Bennette and Devon Davis.
Buddy’s Gym Kerwin Clarke gained the nod of the six judges to successfully defend his Mr. HRC title when the fourth edition of the Hugh Ross Classic Body Building and Fitness Show successfully came off at the National Cultural Centre on Saturday evening last.
Clarke’s win did not come easy as he first had to negate the challenge of Godfrey Stoby (Tower Gym) to win the Light Middleweight category which featured four athletes and was the most competitive on the night.
Having disposed of the Stoby challenge, Clarke had to overcome four other challengers including Stoby in the overall showdown that featured the other male category winners: Heavyweight – 177lbs & Over category, Alex Hamilton of Windero Gym of Berbice; Welterweight – 155 – 165lbs (75kg) Sylvester Andrews of Total Fitness (Soesdyke); Lightweight – 144 – 154lbs (70kg) Marlon Benette of X-Treme Fitness Gym and winner of the Bantamweight – 143lbs (65kg) class Devon Davis of the Guyana Defence Force Gym.
Clarke kept his composure to successfully retain the crown in a close battle with Davis who again had to play second best, with Andrews, the reigning GABBFF Novice King, taking third.
The judges requested a comparison between Clarke, Davis and Andrews to ensure that they got it right on the night. Even when the Chief Judge invited the athletes for the final pose down (where music is played and they aim to out pose each other), the judges had him {Chief Judge} hold off a bit to ensure they had a good final look at the athletes.
Clarke was also required for a comparison with Stoby, the only comparisons of the night.
Patrons were treated to a fine evening of muscle flexing which also saw the ladies entertaining in the three categories that they contested. It was the largest turn out of female athletes on stage for many years; an encouraging 11 females were on show.
Seasoned campaigner Alisha Fortune won the Ms. Physique crown from her Guyana Defence Force Gym mate Kascia Beaton.
Another seasoned athlete, Nadina Taharally representing Interline Fitness, took the Ms. Figure first place from five (5) other beauties.
But it was the Ms. Bikini contest which was introduced at the Classics for the first time that rolled heads and had the audience very involved. Nine beauties sporting attractive bodies paraded on stage in their bikini suits in the first segment and later, the Evening/Casual segment.
They captivated the audience for every minute they were on stage; emerging as the winner was Denzelyn Clarke of X-Treme Fitness ahead of Danelle Long of Body Max Gym. Fitness Paradise’ Shenell Warner placed third with Letitia Myles of Guyana Defence Force fourth.
Feature Guest Poser Jeff ‘Classic’ Beckham was in a vintage mood as he strutted his stuff on stage and even in the crowd briefly. The IFBB Pro entered the NCC throwing red rose petals on stage and posing to a Celine Dion’s Hero.
The crowd went wild when the DJ switched to Wine Pun Ma Button done by local dancehall artiste James Bond; Beckham’s moves and posing routine thereafter complimented the words of Bond’s song much to the delight of the fans.
Earlier in the Show USA based athlete Rawle Greene was also featured as a Guest Poser. Hugh Ross, Beckham, Greene and Dexter Garnett also did a bit of posing together late in the show.
Hampers, compliments of Fitness Express to the first place winners; trophies and medals compliments The Trophy Stall and cash prizes (1st to 3rd and overall) were handed out.
