A family of five is homeless, after fire destroyed their house at 311 Determa Street, Mackenzie, Linden, early yesterday morning.
The household fled with only the clothes on their backs from the inferno which quickly spread throughout the building. Their losses were estimated in the millions, as the home had all modern amenities.
According to reports, the fire started in the middle room of the three-bedroom house. The family was reportedly aroused by a nine-year-old, who was alone in the room in which the fire started.
A neighbour recalled hearing muffled sounds emanating from the building around the time the fire started. He did not pay much attention; he said he thought that there was a quarrel.
However, some time later, he said, he looked out and saw the house on fire.
The man said that he immediately started gathering some of his important documents, as he feared the fire would spread to his house as well.
Fortunately, however, none of the nearby homes were affected.
The Linden Fire Station was highly commended for its prompt response. Bosai Minerals Group Guyana Incorporated (BMGGI, also rendered assistance.”The fire attendants came in a jiffy. They were able to control it although it spread quick time”, a neighbour pointed out.
The homeless family is currently staying with relatives at Wismar.
The destroyed building was home to Rushell Bentick, her reputed husband Warren Arindell, a taxi driver, their two children and a relative and her daughter.
